What would you do if you couldn’t afford safe, decent shelter for your family? For some people providing a secure home can involve couch surfing during long waits for public housing or entering into a rent-induced poverty trap.
Habitat for Humanity is a charity that many struggling families turn to under these circumstances. Through low interest mortgages, donated materials and volunteer labour they provide opportunities for families to have their own home.
Over the last 30 years Habitat has helped build more than 350,000 houses around the world providing more than 1.5 million people in more than 3,000 communities with somewhere to call home.
Origin people volunteer their time to help Habitat build their homes. Our volunteers help with all stages of the build, including putting up external walls, building fences and painting.
In 2009, more than 20 Origin volunteers journeyed to Fiji to help build a home for a local family. Over two weeks, the volunteers constructed the entire home.
